HOWELL, J, B. L., SOLBERT PERMUTT, D. F. PROCTOR AND R. ]L. RILEY. Effect of inflution of iha lung on d#erent parts of pub monary uascular bed. J. A& Physiol. 16(l): 71-76. 1961.-In excised lungs of dogs, the static pressure-volume characteristics of the vascular bed were determined with the vessels filled with dextran and again after replacement of the dextran with kerosene. Whereas the dextran was distributed throughout the entire vascular bed, the kerosene was distributed only in relatively large vessels due to interfacial tension, Volumepressure curves obtained with kerosene were markedly different from those obtained with dextran. Utilizing both types of volume-pressure curves, it was possible to separate the vascular bed of the lung into two compartments that responded oppositely to inflation of the lung when vascular pressure was held constant: one compartment, consisting of relatively large vessels, always increased in volume; the other compartment, consisting of smaller vessels, always decreased in volume.

Sustained Hypoxic Pulmonary Vasoconstriction in the Isolated Perfused Rat Lung: Effect of α1-adrenergic Receptor Agonist
Background: Alveolar hypoxia induces monophasic pulmonary vasoconstriction in vivo, biphasic vasoconstriction in the isolated pulmonary artery, and controversial responses in the isolated perfused lung. Pulmonary vascular responses to sustained alveolar hypoxia have not been addressed in the isolated perfused rat lung. In this study, we investigated the effect of sustained hypoxic ventilation o...
متن کاملQuantitative evaluation of hemodynamic parameters during acute alveolar hypoxia and hypercapnia in the isolated ventilated-perfused rabbit lung
Introduction: Acute respiratory disorders such as obstructive pulmonary diseases and hypoventilation may lead to alveolar hypoxia and hypercapnia which their effects on pulmonary vascular beds are controversial. The aim of this study was to establish the isolated perfused lung setup and investigate the effects of alveolar hypoxia and hypercapnia on pulmonary vascular resistance. Methods: White ...
متن کاملStatins and Pulmonary Hypertension in Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease
Chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) is a chronic multisystem disease with a considerable burden. One of its most common complications is pulmonary artery hypertension (PAH). It has been demonstrated that the development of PAH is correlated with decreased quality of life and survival. Different medications have been proposed for the treatment of PAH, among which one can name statins. Howeve...
متن کاملEffect of pulmonary blood flow upon lung mechanics.
Airway pressure was continuously recorded in an isolated horizontally mounted canine heart-lung preparation during abrupt, stepwise 100-200 ml inflations to 20-25 cm water pressure, and subsequent deflations. With each change in volume there was a steep rise or fall in pressure, followed by stress relaxation to a static equilibrium airway pressure. Comparison was made between the nonperfused st...
متن کاملThe Role of Anion Exchanger on Pulmonary Vascular Response to Sustained Alveolar Hypoxia in the Isolated Perfused Rabbit Lung
Background: Some respiratory diseases may induce alveolar hypoxia thereby hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV). However, the mechanisms of this physiologic phenomenon are not fully understood. This study was the first to investigate the role of anion exchanger in sustained HPV.Methods: Experiments were performed in the isolated perfused rabbit lung. After preparation, the lungs were divided...
